Matt Condon aiming for big season following maiden ton

07-Oct-2015

At just 19, Eastern Suburbs batsman Matt Condon scored his maiden First Grade century in Easts’ big win over Parramatta on Saturday.

Opening the innings, Condon and Australian Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill put on 196 for the first wicket before Condon fell for 110 off just 90 balls, an innings that included 12 fours and 4 sixes.

Originally from Batemans Bay, Condon spent last year playing for ACT, playing in matches against England and Ireland.

And after a difficult first season in Sydney, Condon is happy to hit some form early in 2015/16.

"I'm happy to be contributing well but I'm trying to get rid of the 'young bloke' tag so I'm not really concerned by the age."

"Bevo's helped me out a lot this season but the best bit of advice would be keep it simple and play to your strengths," Condon says.

After a promising start to the season, Condon has set lofty goals, hoping to score 1000 runs and earn a NSW contract for next season, something which would be a dream come true.

Coach Michael Bevan was full of praise for his side after their record-breaking victory over Parramatta on Saturday.

Bevan, who is in his third season as coach, felt that despite last week’s narrow loss to Campbelltown-Camden, the side played some good cricket and was happy they took that into the game.

The 229-run win was highlighted by Condon, who had good support from Peter Nevill and Ian Moran, who both made half centuries.

"I know Claro addressed the players after the match in particular the batters and the importance of going on with the job which they did beautifully."

"There have been some encouraging signs in the past two matches. Even in the first loss we played good solid cricket. It’s nice to hit the ground running after last season’s improvement which means we can continue to build on a high base."

"Like anything we will be tested moving forward and have bad days and it will be about how we respond to those on an on-going basis.
