Ezekiel century puts Easts on top in Caringbah

13-Nov-2017

Easts Dolphins again piled on the runs, but will have 10 hard fought wickets to take when their two day match against Sutherland resumes this Saturday at Glenn McGrath Oval in Caringbah.

The Dolphins declared their innings at 7-399, continuing their record of not having been bowled yet this season. Though in the four overs before stumps, Sutherland fired a warning sign of their own reaching 0-25 in quick time.

Overall, Easts dominated the opening day from the outset, with opening Adam Ezekiel continuing his rich vein of form to start the season with 101 from 166 balls.

Ezekiel shared a 74-run opening stand with Angus Robson before teaming up with skipper Greg Clarence for the most meaningful partnership of the day for the third wicket.

The duo shared a 120-run stand to take the score to 3-238 when Ezekiel was finally dismissed, but by then the platform was laid for the lower order to lift the run-rate.

Clarence was eventually dismissed for 87, but Australia under 19s wicketkeeper Baxter Holt continued the carnage, smashing 79 from 94 balls in an innings that included three sixes.

Will Somerville added 40 runs of his own at number six which ensured that all but one Easts batsman in the top six are averaging below 60 over the first five rounds of the competition. That is not including Peter Nevill and Nic Maddinson who also average well over 60 but were absent on representative duties.

"Our batting has been exceptional to start the season and is an area of strength for us this season," captain Greg Clarence said.

"Ezekiel just set-up the day for us today and the key was to have wickets in hand so the middle and lower order could play with freedom when the wicket flattened out and that's what happened."

"Having 400 to defend is a great position to be in and was our target at the start of the day but we know the job is only half done."

Easts are currently undefeated and lie in second position on the First Grade table, having scored an incredible 1381 runs for the loss of just 20 wickets in five rounds.
