Easts win two from two against Gordon in pre-season trials

With the Sydney Grade competition starting this weekend, Easts took on Gordon in two trial matches over the weekend, with a win in both matches. This is a great sign in the lead up to the season starting with indications that the club has even more depth heading into season 2014/15 with a lot of players fighting out for spots in all five grades.

On Saturday a number of new players to the club were eager to impress in a lower grade trial at Turramurra Oval. Easts were sent into bat on a lifeless slow wicket. Easts ended up 6/208 after their 50 overs with both openers Sam Hulston and Sam Smyth both retiring for 33 a piece at the first drinks break. Former Sydney keeper batsmen Sam Mullens top scored for Easts with 55 also retired while Reuben Taucher contributed 29. Gordon were always behind in their chase as wickets continually fell and they were eventually bowled out in the 44th over for 189 with Angus Palmer 3/24, Chris Hulston 2/30 and new English import Steve Lewis 2/30 the main wicket takers.

On Sunday at Killara Oval a composite 1st/2nd grade side also took on Gordon in a rain reduced match. Easts didn’t start well losing two wickets in the first over before James Deacon and Tom Gallop set about resurrecting the innings. James Deacon eventually retired for 68 with contributions from Matt Yiend 42 and Tas Yazdani 38. Gordon set about their chase with caution, but as the run rate increased, wickets fell with 24 required off the last two overs. Gordon finished 14 short at 8/197 with Sandy Rogers 2/30 Nathan Rowe 2/35, and Jack Playfair 2/36 the main wicket takers.
